The Policy of Ring Fence (1765-1813) was a major strategic tactic applied by British East India Company, which shaped the future course of relation between the Company and the states. This Policy was reflected in Warren Hastings’ wars against the Marathas and Mysore, and aimed at creating buffer zones to defend the Company’s frontiers. The main threat was from the Marathas and the Afghan invaders (the Company undertook to organize Awadh’s defence to safeguard Bengal’s security). Wellesley’s Policy of Subsidiary Alliance was an extension of Ring Fence—which sought to reduce the states to a position of dependence on the British Government in India. Major Powers, such as Hyderabad, Awadh and the Marathas accepted Subsidiary Alliance. Thus, the British supremacy was established.

Incorrect Statements Explanation:

1. Policy of Ring Fence:
The Policy of Ring Fence was not applied by Wellesley for defending the Company's frontiers. It was actually a policy implemented by Warren Hastings during his tenure as Governor-General of India. The policy aimed at securing the British territories against external threats by forming alliances with neighboring states.

2. Extension of the Policy of Subsidiary Alliance:
The Policy of Ring Fence was not an extension of the Policy of Subsidiary Alliance. The Subsidiary Alliance was a policy introduced by Lord Wellesley, brother of Arthur Wellesley, where Indian rulers were forced to accept British troops in their territory for their protection in exchange for control over their foreign relations. This policy was quite different from the Ring Fence policy.
Therefore, both statements are incorrect, and the correct answer is option D - Neither 1 nor 2.
