Therefore, the land revenue collection had to be efficiently organized, so as to expropriate the maximum possible surplus from the people. It is generally stated that the Mauryan rule constitutes a landmark in the history of the improvement of the system of taxation in ancient India. The Mauryas, in fact, attached great importance to the assessment of land revenue and the highest officer in charge of this was the Samharta. The Sannidhata was the chief custodian of the state treasury. Since the revenue was also collected in kind, providing storage facilities was also the duty of the latter.
