Heterotrophic bacteria are most abundant in nature. The majority are important decomposers.

Commonly known as sac-fungi, the ascomycetes are mostly multicellular, e.g., Penicillium, or rarelyunicellular, e.g., yeast (Saccharomyces). They are saprophytic, decomposers, parasitic or coprophilous (growing on dung).

Some members of deuteromycetes are saprophytes or parasites while a large number of them are decomposers of litter and help in mineral cycling. Some examples are Alternaria, Colletotrichum and Trichoderma.

The Importance of Fungi in Nutrient Recycling:

Fungi are important decomposers and mineralizers of the biosphere. They are essential for maintaining soil fertility and recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. Here are some reasons why fungi are so important:

1. Decomposition: Fungi break down dead organic matter, such as leaves, wood, and animal carcasses, into simpler compounds that can be used by other organisms. This process releases nutrients back into the soil, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon.

2. Symbiotic Relationships: Fungi form mutually beneficial relationships with plants, known as mycorrhizae. The fungi provide the plants with nutrients, such as phosphorus, while the plants provide the fungi with carbohydrates.

3. Soil Structure: Fungi help to create a healthy soil structure by producing hyphae, which bind soil particles together and prevent erosion.

4. Disease Control: Some fungi are used as biological control agents to control plant diseases. For example, the fungus Trichoderma is used to control soil-borne pathogens.

Overall, fungi play a crucial role in maintaining the health of ecosystems by recycling nutrients and supporting plant growth.

Fungi are important part of the ecosystem nutrient cycles . They acquire the nutrients through their hyphae. They also acts as a good decomposers and mineraliser of the biosphere. They recycle Carbon and inorganic minerals by the process of decompositions .
Most of the fungi are decomposers and are called as the Saprotrophs. They feed on the dead and decaying organic matter and nutrients , and eventually return it to the soil for plants to use . Fungi are the only decomposers that can break down wood and the cellulose in plants cell wall
