Acidified solutions of sodium thiosulphate are unstable because in thi...
Explanation:

Acidified solutions of sodium thiosulphate are unstable because of the following reasons:

- Two sulphur atoms are at different oxidation states of 6 and -2: Thiosulphate ion (S2O32-) contains two sulphur atoms, one in the +6 oxidation state and the other in the -2 oxidation state. In acidified solutions, the +6 oxidation state of sulphur gets reduced to sulphur dioxide (SO2) which makes the solution unstable.
- Presence of S-S bonds: Thiosulphate ion contains a S-S bond which is unstable in acidic conditions. The bond gets broken down and forms elemental sulphur (S) which makes the solution cloudy and reduces its effectiveness.
- No presence of S in oxidation state of zero: Thiosulphate ion does not contain S in the oxidation state of zero. It contains S in the oxidation states of +6 and -2.

Therefore, the correct option is B, i.e., the two sulphur atoms are at different oxidation states of 6 and -2.
