Hydathodes are specialized pores (openings) particularly present on the leaf margins, which exudes or secretes drops of water. The exudation of water as drops from the tip or margin of the leaves is called guttation. The process of guttation is facilitated by the hydathodes. They are also called as Water Stomata because they structurally resemble stomata and they facilitate guttation. Hydathodes are commonly found in Angiosperms, especially in grasses. The water stomata always stay opened since, they do not have opening and closing mechanism.

Hydathodes in Plants

Hydathodes are specialized structures found in plants that play a crucial role in the loss of water in a liquid state. These structures are commonly found in the leaves of plants and act as tiny pores through which water is released. They are also known as water stomata or water pores.

The Function of Hydathodes

The main function of hydathodes is to release excess water from the plant's tissues, primarily in the form of liquid water droplets. This process is known as guttation. Guttation occurs when the soil moisture level is high, and the plant is unable to take up all the water through its roots. In such cases, the plant excretes the excess water through hydathodes.

Opening and Closing of Hydathodes

Unlike typical stomata that open and close to regulate gas exchange and water loss, hydathodes do not show any specificity in opening and closing. They remain open under suitable conditions for guttation to occur. When the soil moisture level is high and the plant's water uptake capacity is exceeded, hydathodes open up to release the excess water. This allows the plant to maintain a proper water balance.

Closure of Hydathodes

Hydathodes do not remain closed during the day or night. They only close when the soil moisture level decreases or when the plant has adequate water supply and does not need to release excess water. If the plant's water requirements are met and there is no need for guttation, hydathodes close to prevent further water loss.

Summary

Hydathodes are specialized structures found in plants that allow the loss of water in a liquid state. They remain open under suitable conditions for guttation and only close when the plant's water requirements are met. Unlike regular stomata, hydathodes do not show any specificity in opening and closing, making them always open when water loss is needed.
