Understanding Slime Moulds and Fungi
Slime moulds and fungi share several characteristics, yet they differ significantly in specific aspects, particularly in their cell wall composition.

The Key Difference: Cell Wall Composition
- Slime moulds do not have the typical cell walls found in fungi.
- Instead of chitin, which is the primary component of fungal cell walls, slime moulds have cell walls made of cellulose.

Other Similarities
- Heterotrophic Nature: Both slime moulds and fungi are heterotrophic, meaning they obtain their nutrients from organic sources.
- Swimming Cells: Slime moulds possess swimming cells that can be either flagellated or amoeboid, similar to some motile fungal spores.
- Glycogen Storage: Both groups store energy in the form of glycogen, which is a common trait among various eukaryotic organisms.

Conclusion
In summary, while slime moulds and fungi share many characteristics, the main distinguishing feature lies in their cell wall composition. Slime moulds have cellulose in their walls, whereas fungi are characterized by chitin. This fundamental difference highlights the unique evolutionary pathways of these organisms. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for students preparing for competitive exams like NEET.

Slime moulds are similar to fungi in all regards except one:a)They are...
Slime molds were once considered fungi, but unlike fungi, they can move, and their cell membranes are made of different stuff. The dictyostelids are another group formerly classified among the fungi. They are slime molds that feed as unicellular amoebae, but aggregate into a reproductive stalk and sporangium  under certain conditions. Cells of the reproductive stalk, as well as the spores formed at the apex, possess a cellulose cell wall. The spore wall has been shown to possess three layers, the middle of which is composed primarily of cellulose, and the innermost is sensitive to cellulase and pronase.
