This powder is then mixed with a hot solution of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) at high pressure and temperature in a digester vessel. The caustic soda dissolves the alumina content of the bauxite, while impurities remain insoluble.

2. Clarification: After digestion, the resulting slurry is transferred to a series of settlers and clarifiers to separate the solid impurities, known as red mud, from the liquid. The red mud settles at the bottom, while the clear liquid, called the liquor, is decanted and collected.

3. Heat recovery: The clarified liquor is then sent to a heat exchanger where it is cooled by exchanging heat with incoming hot liquor. This process helps to recover heat and improve the energy efficiency of the overall process.

4. Hydrate precipitation: The cooled liquor is then subjected to a process known as precipitation. In this step, fine aluminum hydroxide crystals are formed by adding seed crystals or by inducing nucleation using a seeding material. These aluminum hydroxide crystals are referred to as hydrate.

5. Settling and washing: The hydrate particles are allowed to settle in a series of thickeners, and the remaining liquor is decanted. The settled hydrate is then washed several times to remove any remaining impurities.

6. Calcination: The washed hydrate is dried and heated in a kiln to a temperature of around 1000 degrees Celsius. This process converts the hydrate into alumina by driving off the chemically bound water. The resulting alumina is a fine white powder.

7. Purification: The alumina is further purified through a process called refining, which involves dissolving it in a concentrated solution of caustic soda. This solution is then subjected to various filtration and precipitation steps to remove impurities.

8. Product storage: The purified alumina is finally stored in silos or transported for further processing, such as smelting into aluminum metal.
