John buys an old scooter for Rs. 4700 and spends Rs. 800 on its repair...
Whenever we get this type of question, we should have formula in mind that,
Gain% = (gain/cost) x 100

Cost = 4700 + 800 = Rs. 5500
S.P. = Rs. 5800

Profit = 5800 - 5500 = 300

4700 +800= 5500 is the total amount he invest in the old scooter.
s.p.= 5800-5500 = 300
300 is the 5.5% of the 5500

John buys an old scooter for Rs. 4700 and spends Rs. 800 on its repair...
Yes see... CP was 4700 and then he spent 800 on repairing so final CP= 4700+800=5500
SP= 5800
that means profit= 5800-5500= Rs300

Now, Gain%= Gain*100/CP
ie. Gain%=300*100/5500= 66/11 ans.
