A convex mirror in a shop has a focal length of 15m. A person is standing 12m away from this mirror. Find the position of his image.


Solution


There are two ways to approach this problem:



  1. Using the mirror formula

  2. Using ray diagrams



Using the Mirror Formula


The mirror formula is given as:


1/f = 1/u + 1/v


where:



  • f is the focal length of the mirror

  • u is the object distance

  • v is the image distance



In this case, we have:



  • f = 15m

  • u = -12m (since the person is standing in front of the mirror)

  • v = ?



Substituting these values in the mirror formula, we get:


1/15 = 1/-12 + 1/v


Solving for v, we get:


v = -20m


Since the image distance is negative, the image is formed behind the mirror. Therefore, the position of the person's image is 20m behind the convex mirror.


Using Ray Diagrams


We can also use ray diagrams to find the position of the person's image. The steps involved are:



  1. Draw a ray from the person that is parallel to the principal axis of the mirror

  2. Draw a ray from the person that passes through the focal point of the mirror

  3. The reflected rays will appear to come from the same point behind the mirror, which is the position of the person's image



Using this method, we can see that the person's image is formed 20m behind the convex mirror, which is consistent with the result obtained using the mirror formula.
