Effect of Adding Different Substances on pH of .1 M CH3COOH Solution

Introduction

CH3COOH is a weak acid, and it dissociates partially in water to give H+ and CH3COO- ions. The pH of a solution of CH3COOH depends on the concentration of these ions in the solution. When other substances are added to the solution, they can affect the dissociation of CH3COOH and, consequently, the pH of the solution.

Effect of Adding NaHSO4

NaHSO4 is a strong acid, and it dissociates completely to give H+ and HSO4- ions. When NaHSO4 is added to a solution of CH3COOH, the H+ ions from NaHSO4 combine with the CH3COO- ions from CH3COOH to form more CH3COOH molecules. This reduces the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, and the pH of the solution increases.

Effect of Adding HClO4

HClO4 is a strong acid, similar to NaHSO4. When HClO4 is added to a solution of CH3COOH, it reacts with CH3COOH to form more H+ ions and ClO4- ions. This increases the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, and the pH of the solution decreases.

Effect of Adding KNO3

KNO3 is a salt, and it dissociates completely in water to give K+ and NO3- ions. When KNO3 is added to a solution of CH3COOH, the K+ ions do not react with CH3COOH, but the NO3- ions can react with H+ ions to form HNO3. This reduces the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, and the pH of the solution increases.

Effect of Adding K2CO3

K2CO3 is a salt, similar to KNO3. When K2CO3 is added to a solution of CH3COOH, the K+ ions do not react with CH3COOH, but the CO3-2 ions can react with H+ ions to form HCO3- ions. This reduces the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, and the pH of the solution increases.

Conclusion

The pH of a solution of CH3COOH can be affected by adding different substances to the solution. Strong acids increase the concentration of H+ ions and decrease the pH, while salts can decrease the concentration of H+ ions and increase the pH.
