The difference in invert levels between two pits separated by a distance of 30 meter is one meter.
An intermediate pit is required to be constructed at a distance of 18 meter from the pit at higher
level. Maintaining the same slope, the difference in invert levels of the new pit and the pit at lower
level in mm will be _________

Important : you should answer only the numeric value
Correct answer is '400'. Can you explain this answer?

    Explanation:

    • What are invert levels?

    • An invert level is the lowest point of a pipe or pit where water flows.

    • Given data:

    • Distance between two pits = 30 m
Difference in invert levels of two pits = 1 m
Distance of intermediate pit from higher level pit = 18 m

    • Calculating slope:

    • Let the invert level of the higher pit be H, and that of the lower pit be L. Then the slope between the two pits is (H - L)/30.
      Given that the difference in invert levels is 1 m, so (H - L)/30 = 1, which gives H - L = 30.

    • Calculating invert level of intermediate pit:

    • Distance of intermediate pit from higher level pit = 18 m, so the invert level of intermediate pit is H - (18/30)(H - L) = H - 0.6(H - L).
      Substituting H - L = 30, we get invert level of intermediate pit = H - 0.6(30) = H - 18.

    • Calculating difference in invert levels of new pit and lower level pit:

    • The new pit is at a distance of (30 - 18) = 12 m from the lower level pit. Let the invert level of the new pit be N.
Then the slope between the new pit and lower level pit is (N - L)/12.
      Since the slope is maintained the same, we have (N - L)/12 = (H - L)/30, which gives N - L = (12/30)(H - L).
Substituting H - L = 30 and N = L + x (where x is the difference in invert levels between new pit and low level pit in mm), we get x = 400 mm.

Therefore, the difference in invert levels of the new pit and the pit at lower level is 400 mm.
