Two resistances of 400 Ω and 800 Ω are connected in series with 6 volt...
Calculation of Current:
I = V/R
Total Resistance (Rt) = R1 + R2 = 400 + 800 = 1200 Ω
V = 6V
∴ I = 6/1200 = 0.005 A

Calculation of Potential Difference across 400 Ω Resistor:
V1 = IR1 = 0.005 x 400 = 2V

Effective Resistance of Circuit:
Re = R1 + R2 + RV
RV = 10,000 Ω (Resistance of Voltmeter)
∴ Re = 400 + 800 + 10,000 = 11,200 Ω

Error in Measurement of Potential Difference:
The potential difference measured by the voltmeter is the potential difference across 400 Ω resistor and not the total potential difference of the circuit. Due to the introduction of the voltmeter, the effective resistance of the circuit increases and thus, the potential difference across 400 Ω resistor reduces. Let ΔV be the error in measurement.
∵ RV < r1,="" />
∴ ΔV/V1 = RV/(R1 + R2 + RV)
ΔV = V1 x (RV/(R1 + R2 + RV))
ΔV = 2 x (10,000/(400 + 800 + 10,000))
ΔV = 0.05 V

Approximate Error:
The error is given as 0.05 volts, which is the correct answer (option D).
