Solution:

Let us assume that the capacity of the tank is 'x' liters.

Given, pipe A can fill the tank in 12 minutes.

Therefore, the rate of filling of pipe A = x/12 liters per minute.

Similarly, pipe B can fill the tank in 24 minutes.

Therefore, the rate of filling of pipe B = x/24 liters per minute.

When both pipes are used together, the rate of filling of the tank = rate of filling of pipe A + rate of filling of pipe B.

= x/12 + x/24

= (2x + x)/24

= 3x/24

= x/8 liters per minute.

Hence, the time taken to fill the tank when both pipes are used together = Capacity of the tank / Rate of filling of both pipes.

= x / (x/8)

= 8 minutes.

Therefore, the correct option is (B) 8 min.
