Twelve men can complete a work in 8 days. Three days after they started the work, 3 more men joined them. In how many days will all of them together complete the remaining work?

Solution:

Given that,

12 men can complete the work in 8 days

Let’s consider the total work as 1 unit.

Therefore,

12 men can complete the work in 8 days

1 man can complete the work in 96 days (12 × 8)

Now,

Work done by 12 men in 3 days = (12 × 3)/8 = 4.5 units (using the formula work = men × time)

Remaining work = 1 – 4.5 = –3.5 units

Note: The remaining work is in negative because they have completed more work than required in the first 3 days.

Now,

15 men can complete the work in x days (after 3 days)

Let’s use the formula,

Men1 × Days1 = Men2 × Days2

12 × 8 = 15 × x

x = 9.6 days

Therefore,

All the men together can complete the remaining work in 9.6 – 3 = 6.6 (approx. 7) days

Hence, the correct answer is option (b) 4 days.
