Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent that can react with various reducing agents. One of the reducing agents that can be oxidized by potassium permanganate is sulfur dioxide (SO2). The reaction between potassium permanganate and sulfur dioxide produces sulfuric acid (H2SO4), which is a strong acid.

Explanation:

The reaction between potassium permanganate and sulfur dioxide can be represented as follows:

2KMnO4 + 5SO2 + 2H2O → K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 2H2SO4

In this reaction, the purple color of potassium permanganate is reduced to a colorless solution of potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and manganese sulfate (MnSO4). The sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfuric acid (H2SO4), which is a strong acid that can dissociate in water to form H+ and SO42- ions.

The oxidation state of sulfur in sulfur dioxide is +4, while in sulfuric acid, it is +6. This indicates that sulfur dioxide is oxidized by potassium permanganate, and the oxidation state of sulfur increases from +4 to +6.

The reaction between potassium permanganate and sulfur dioxide is often used as a laboratory test for the presence of sulfur dioxide in a sample. The purple color of potassium permanganate disappears when it reacts with sulfur dioxide, indicating the presence of this gas.

Conclusion:

Potassium permanganate can oxidize sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid, which is a strong acid. This reaction is often used as a laboratory test for the presence of sulfur dioxide in a sample.

Potassium permanganate oxidises sulphur dioxide toa)sulphurb)sulphuric...
Kmno4 is a very strong oxidising agent whereas the so2 is strong reducing agent so the so2 reduces Mn. The equation for the reaction is 5so2+2kmno4+2h2o= 2h2so4+2mnso4+k2so4. KMNO4 is actually a very very strong oxidizing agent but SO2 is strong reducing agent so that SO2 reduces Mn. In these products sulphuric acid is product hence sulphuric acid is the answer
