Compound that forms offensive smell when heated with chloroform and alcoholic potash

When a compound is heated with chloroform and alcoholic potash, it undergoes a reaction called the Carbylamine reaction. This reaction is used to distinguish primary, secondary, and tertiary amines.

In this reaction, the amine group is replaced by a methyl group, and an isocyanide is formed. This isocyanide has a pungent and offensive smell. Therefore, the compound that will form an offensive smell when heated with chloroform and alcoholic potash is an amine.

Out of the given options, the only compound that is an amine is C₂H₅NH₂, which is ethylamine. Therefore, option A is the correct answer.
