Given:

Resistance 1, R1 = 9.5 ohm

Voltage 1, V1 = 11.4 V

Resistance 2, R2 = 11.5 ohm

Voltage 2, V2 = 11.5 V


To find:

A) The emf of the battery.

B) The internal resistance of the battery.


Solution:

Let the emf of the battery be E and the internal resistance of the battery be r.


Using Ohm's law for the first case:

V1 = IR1

Where, I = current flowing through the circuit.

So, I = V1/R1 = 11.4/9.5 = 1.2 A

Now, the voltage drop across the internal resistance of the battery is Ir.

So, the voltage of the battery is E = V1 + Ir = 11.4 + 1.2r


Using Ohm's law for the second case:

V2 = IR2

So, I = V2/R2 = 11.5/11.5 = 1 A

Now, the voltage drop across the internal resistance of the battery is Ir.

So, the voltage of the battery is E = V2 + Ir = 11.5 + r


Equating the two expressions for E:

11.4 + 1.2r = 11.5 + r

0.2r = 0.1

r = 0.5 ohm


Substituting the value of r in any of the two expressions for E:

E = 11.4 + 1.2 x 0.5 = 12 V
