Calculation of Maximum Distance of Jeep from Observer

Given:
Distance between headlights of jeep, d = 1.2 m
Diameter of pupil of observer's eye, D = 2 mm
Wavelength of light used, λ = 5896 Å

Formula:
Angle of resolution, θ = 1.22λ/D
Maximum distance, L = d/2tanθ

Calculation:
θ = 1.22(5896 Å)/(2 mm) = 3.34 x 10^-4 rad
tanθ = 3.34 x 10^-4
L = (1.2 m)/(2 x 3.34 x 10^-4) = 1.80 x 10^3 m

Answer:
The maximum distance of the jeep from the observer should be 1.80 km (option c).

Explanation:
The angle of resolution is the smallest angle that two objects can be separated by and still be distinguished as two separate objects. For a given wavelength of light and diameter of the pupil of the observer's eye, the angle of resolution can be calculated using the formula θ = 1.22λ/D.

Once the angle of resolution is known, the maximum distance at which two objects can be resolved can be calculated using the formula L = d/2tanθ, where d is the distance between the objects.

In this case, the maximum distance at which the two headlights of the jeep can be resolved by the observer's eye is 1.80 km.
