  • Length of Rock Sample (l) = 100 mm

  • Weight of Dry Rock Sample (Wdry) = 300 g

  • Weight of Saturated Rock Sample (Wsaturated) = 330 g

  • Specific Gravity of Brine Solution (SG) = 1.05



Calculation:


  • Volume of Rock Sample = π/4 x d2 x l

  • Volume of Solid Material = Volume of Rock Sample x (1 - Porosity)

  • Volume of Pore Space = Volume of Rock Sample x Porosity

  • Weight of Solid Material = Weight of Dry Rock Sample / (1 - Porosity)

  • Weight of Water = Weight of Saturated Rock Sample - Weight of Dry Rock Sample

  • Volume of Water = Weight of Water / (SG x g)

  • Porosity = Volume of Pore Space / Volume of Rock Sample x 100%



Substituting the values:


  • Volume of Rock Sample = π/4 x 502 x 100 = 196349.54 mm3

  • Volume of Solid Material = 196349.54 x (1 - Porosity)

  • Volume of Pore Space = 196349.54 x Porosity

  • Weight of Solid Material = 300 / (1 - Porosity)

  • Weight of Water = 330 - 300 = 30 g

  • Volume of Water = 30 / (1.05 x 9.81) = 2.7993 cm3

  • Porosity = 2.7993 / 196349.54 x 100% = 0.0014%
