The objective(s) of the Deoband movement was/were to1. Propagate, amon...
The orthodox section among the Muslim ulema organised the Deoband Movement. It was a revivalist movement whose twin objectives were to: (i) propagate among the Muslims the pure teachings of the Koran, and the Hadis and (ii) keep alive the spirit of jihad against the foreign rulers. The new Deoband leader Mahmud-ul-Hasan (1851-1920) sought to impart a political and intellectual content to the religious ideas of the school. The liberal interpretation of Islam created political awakening among its followers.

The objective(s) of the Deoband movement was/were to1. Propagate, amon...
The Deoband movement was a Muslim revivalist movement in India that emerged in the mid-19th century. Its primary objective was to reform and purify Islam from what its leaders saw as corruptions and innovations that had crept into the religion over the centuries. The movement took its name from the town of Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, where its leading seminary was established in 1867.

The correct answer to the question is option 'D' - None of the above. The Deoband movement did not aim to propagate Western or rational thought, nor did it promote women-centred social reforms. Instead, its main objectives were as follows:

1. To promote Islamic education and scholarship: The Deoband movement placed great emphasis on the study of Islamic texts and traditions, and sought to establish a network of madrasas (religious schools) throughout India to impart this knowledge to Muslims.

2. To resist British colonialism: The Deoband movement was deeply opposed to British colonial rule in India, which it saw as a threat to Islam and Muslim culture. Its leaders encouraged Muslims to resist British policies and to support Indian independence.

3. To purify Islam: The Deoband movement sought to rid Islam of what its leaders saw as corruptions and innovations that had crept into the religion over the centuries. They called for a return to the pure, authentic teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad.

4. To promote Islamic unity: The Deoband movement aimed to bring together Muslims of different sects and backgrounds under a common banner of Islamic revivalism. Its leaders believed that this unity was essential for the survival and success of Islam in India.

In conclusion, while the Deoband movement was an important and influential movement in Indian Islam, its objectives did not include the propagation of Western or rational thought, or the promotion of women-centred social reforms.
