Verified Answer
With reference to Samkhya philosophy, consider the following statemen...
  • The school of Indian philosophy has been divided into two broad classes:
    • The orthodox (astika),
    • The heterodox (nastika).
  • The Astika's has been classified into six chief philosophical systems:
    • Mimansa, Vedanta, Samkhya, Yoga, Nyaya, Vaisesika.
  • The Heterodox's has been divided into three parts:
    • The Charvakas, The Buddhas, The Jainas.
Important points
  • The Samkhya System:
    • It is the philosophy of dualistic realism propounded by Kapila.
    • It admits two ultimate realities: Purusha & Prakrti.
      • These two are interdependent of each other for their existence.
    • According to this philosophy, the presence of a divine entity is not essential for the creation of the world; instead, the world owes its origin to nature or Prakriti than to God (materialistic view).
    • The realization of Self:
      • It is the self which is quite distinct from the body, the senses & the mind.
      • It is beyond the whole world of objects & is the eternal consciousness which witnesses the changes in any way.
      • There must be a Purusa or the self, which is distinct from Prakriti but is the enjoyer of the products of Prakriti.
    • Self-Consciousness:
      • It represents the awakening of nature from her cosmic slumber & the first appearance of thought &, therefore, also called as Intellect.
      • It is the creative thought of the world to be evolved.
      • Ahankara arises with the transformation of the intellect. The function of ahankara is the feeling of I & mine.
      • From ahankara, with an excess of the element of sattva, arise the five organs of knowledge (gyanendriya), the five organs of action (karmendriya), the mind (manas), which is at once an organ of knowledge & activity (abhayendra).
    • The realization of Self & non-self:
      • This is the state of liberation or freedom from suffering, which has been variously described as Mukti, apavarga, kaivalya.
      • It is possible to attain this state while alive in this world or after this life in another world.
  • Around the 4th century AD, in addition to Prakriti, Purusha has also been added in the Samkhya philosophy, i.e., creation of the world is attributed to both nature and God (spiritualistic view).
    • Hence, Statement 1 is incorrect & 2 is correct.
