Structure of centrosome
Centrosome is a small naked organelle found in the cytoplasm of animal cell near the outer surface of the nucleus. It consists of two bundles of microtubules called centrioles that lie at right-angles to each other. Centrioles are short cylinders and possess a whorl of 9 peripheral fibrils. The fibrils are absent in the centre. Each fibrils are made of 3 sub-fibres. There is a proteinaceous hub in the central part of a centriole.
Q. The main structure of centriole is:
  • a)
    9 + 1 fibrils
  • b)
    9+2 fibrils
  • c)
    9 triplets
  • d)
    0+9 fibrils
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Structure of Centrosome

The centrosome is a small organelle found in animal cells, located near the outer surface of the nucleus. It plays a crucial role in cell division and organization of microtubules in the cytoplasm.

Centrioles

The centrosome consists of two bundles of microtubules called centrioles. Centrioles are short cylinders made of microtubules. They are arranged perpendicular to each other, forming a cross-like structure.

Structure of Centrioles

Each centriole has a complex structure consisting of nine triplets of microtubules. The triplets are arranged in a circular pattern, forming a cylinder. Each triplet is composed of three microtubules, which are connected to each other by radial spokes. The microtubules are made up of protein subunits called tubulin. The microtubules of the centriole are organized in such a way that they form a hollow cylinder with a diameter of about 250 nm.

Peripheral Fibrils

In addition to the triplets of microtubules, centrioles also have nine peripheral fibrils. These fibrils are located around the outer edge of the centriole and are composed of protein fibers. Each fibril is made up of several subunits, which are arranged in a specific pattern. The peripheral fibrils provide structural support to the centriole and help to anchor microtubules to the centrosome.

Central Hub

In the center of the centriole, there is a proteinaceous hub. The hub is composed of several proteins, including γ-tubulin. This protein is essential for the nucleation of microtubules and plays a crucial role in the organization of the cytoskeleton.

Conclusion

In summary, the centrosome is a small organelle found in animal cells that plays a critical role in cell division and organization of microtubules. It consists of two bundles of microtubules called centrioles, which are composed of nine triplets of microtubules and nine peripheral fibrils. The central hub of the centriole is essential for the nucleation of microtubules and the organization of the cytoskeleton.
