Structure of centrosome
Centrosome is a small naked organelle found in the cytoplasm of animal cell near the outer surface of the nucleus. It consists of two bundles of microtubules called centrioles that lie at right-angles to each other. Centrioles are short cylinders and possess a whorl of 9 peripheral fibrils. The fibrils are absent in the centre. Each fibrils are made of 3 sub-fibres. There is a proteinaceous hub in the central part of a centriole.
Q. The central hub is connected to the triplets through:
  • a)
    radial spokes
  • b)
    lateral spokes
  • c)
    transverse spokes
  • d)
    pinhead
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Structure of centrosome

The centrosome is an important organelle found in animal cells. It consists of two bundles of microtubules called centrioles. Let's take a closer look at the structure of the centrosome:

Centrioles

Centrioles are short cylinders that are made up of microtubules. They are about 0.2 micrometers in diameter and 0.5 micrometers long. They are arranged perpendicular to each other, and this arrangement is important for the formation of the spindle fibers during cell division. Each centriole consists of 9 triplet microtubules that are arranged in a cylindrical structure. The triplet microtubules are connected to each other by proteins.

Peripheral fibrils

Each triplet microtubule is surrounded by a whorl of 9 peripheral fibrils. The peripheral fibrils are made up of protein and are absent in the center of the centriole. Each fibril is made up of three sub-fibers, which are also made up of protein.

Central hub

In the center of the centriole, there is a proteinaceous hub. The hub is connected to the triplets through radial spokes. The radial spokes are protein structures that connect the hub to the triplets. The hub is important for the organization of the microtubules and is involved in the formation of the spindle fibers during cell division.

Conclusion

The centrosome is a small organelle found in animal cells. It consists of two centrioles that are arranged perpendicular to each other. Each centriole consists of 9 triplet microtubules that are surrounded by peripheral fibrils. In the center of the centriole, there is a proteinaceous hub that is connected to the triplets through radial spokes. The centrosome is important for the organization of the microtubules and is involved in the formation of the spindle fibers during cell division.
