Cells of medullary rays that form part of a cambial ring - Interfascicular cambium

Interfascicular cambium is a type of secondary meristem found in the stems of dicotyledonous plants. It is formed by the division of cells in the medullary rays, which are radial bands of parenchyma cells that extend from the pith to the periphery of the stem. The medullary rays play an important role in transporting water and nutrients across the stem.

The cambium is responsible for the secondary growth of the stem, which results in the increase in girth or thickness. It consists of two types of cells: fusiform initials and ray initials. The fusiform initials are elongated cells that divide longitudinally to produce more fusiform initials and cambial cells. The cambial cells then divide perpendicularly to the long axis of the stem to form xylem cells towards the center and phloem cells towards the periphery.

The interfascicular cambium is located between the vascular bundles in the stem, specifically in the regions of the medullary rays. It forms a continuous ring around the stem and connects the cambium of adjacent vascular bundles. The cells of the medullary rays that form part of the cambial ring are responsible for the production of new xylem and phloem cells, contributing to the growth of the stem in thickness.

In summary, the correct pair is:

a) Cells of medullary rays that form part of a cambial ring - Interfascicular cambium
