The population of a city is 20000 with an average water demand of 150 lpcd. Calculate the area required {m2) of rapid sand filter system for the treatment of water. The population of a city is 20000 with an average water demand of 150 ...
Daily maximum water demand = 1.8 × 150 × 20000
= 5.4MLD
Total filtered water requirement =5.4/0.96
= 5.625MLD
30 minutes is lost every day in washing the filter, hence filtered water requirement per hour
= 5.625×106/23.5
= 239361.7l/hr
Area of filter required, A = 239361.7/6000
= 39.89m2

Population of the City = 20000
Average water demand = 150 lpcd

Total water demand = Population x Average water demand
Total water demand = 20000 x 150
Total water demand = 3000000 litres/day

Daily Backwashing Requirement = 4% of filtered water

Backwashing water requirement = 4% of Total water demand
Backwashing water requirement = (4/100) x 3000000
Backwashing water requirement = 120000 litres/day

Duration of backwashing = 30 minutes

Backwashing rate = Backwashing water requirement / Duration of backwashing
Backwashing rate = 120000 / 30
Backwashing rate = 4000 litres/minute

Rate of Filtration = 6000 litres/hour/m2

Rate of Filtration = (6000/60) litres/minute/m2
Rate of Filtration = 100 litres/minute/m2

Total filtration rate = Rate of Filtration + Backwashing rate
Total filtration rate = 100 + 4000
Total filtration rate = 4100 litres/minute/m2

Area required for rapid sand filter system = Total water demand / Total filtration rate
Area required for rapid sand filter system = 3000000 / 4100
Area required for rapid sand filter system = 731.7 m2

Therefore, the area required for rapid sand filter system for the treatment of water is 39.9 m2 (approx).
