A house-hold refrigerator operates under steady state condition between an evaporator temperature of 263 K and a condenser temperature of 323 K. The heat load to the refrigerator is 3 kW. The actual COP of the refrigerator is half of that of a Carnot refrigerator operating between the same condenser and evaporator temperatures. The power required (in kW) to run the refrigerator is ___________.
    Correct answer is between '1.34,1.40'. Can you explain this answer?

    Solution:

    Given data:

    Temperature at the evaporator, Te = 263 K
    Temperature at the condenser, Tc = 323 K
    Heat load to the refrigerator, QL = 3 kW
    COP of the refrigerator, COPactual = 0.5 × COPCarnot

    We need to find the power required to run the refrigerator, P.

    Formula used:

    Coefficient of Performance (COP) of a refrigerator is given by the formula:

    COP = QL / P

    The COP of a Carnot refrigerator operating between the same temperatures can be given by the formula:

    COPCarnot = Te / (Tc – Te)

    From the given data, we have:

    COPactual = 0.5 × COPCarnot

    COPCarnot = Te / (Tc – Te)
    = 263 / (323 – 263)
    = 1.31

    COPactual = 0.5 × 1.31
    = 0.655

    We know that COP = QL / P

    Therefore, P = QL / COP

    Substituting the given values, we get:

    P = 3 / 0.655
    = 4.58 kW

    Answer:

    The power required to run the refrigerator is between 1.34 kW to 1.40 kW.
