Given below are two statements:
Statement-I: In an ac circuit, the current through a capacitor leads the voltage across it.
Statement-II: In ac circuits containing pure capacitance only, the phase difference between the current and the voltage is π
In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
  • a)
Both statement-I and statement-II are correct
  • b)
Both statement-I and statement-II are incorrect
  • c)
Statement-I is correct but statement-II is incorrect
  • d)
Statement-I is incorrect but statement-II is correct
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Explanation:

  • Statement-I is correct because in a capacitor, the current leads the voltage by 90 degrees in an AC circuit. This is because when the voltage across the capacitor changes, the current through the capacitor also changes, but with a time delay because of the charging and discharging of the capacitor.

  • Statement-II is incorrect because in ac circuits containing pure capacitance only, the phase difference between the current and the voltage is π/2 or 90 degrees, not π or 180 degrees.

  • The phase difference between the current and voltage in an AC circuit containing only a capacitance is given by the formula φ = -arctan(1/ωRC), where ω is the angular frequency, R is the resistance, and C is the capacitance.

  • When R = 0, the phase difference between the current and voltage is -90 degrees (or π/2) and when R is large, the phase difference approaches 0 degrees (or no phase difference).

  • Therefore, statement-I is correct but statement-II is incorrect.
