Solution of HCl Concentration Calculation

Given:

  • Volume of 0.2M HCl = 1L

  • Volume of xM HCl = 500mL = 0.5L

  • Concentration of resulting HCl solution = 0.25M

Calculation

Let's assume the concentration of the xM HCl solution is x M.

The amount of HCl in 1L of 0.2M HCl solution is:

0.2M x 1L = 0.2 moles

The amount of HCl in 0.5L of xM HCl solution is:

xM x 0.5L = 0.5x moles

The total amount of HCl in the resulting solution is:

0.2 + 0.5x moles

The total volume of resulting solution is:

1L + 0.5L = 1.5L

Using the formula:

M1V1 + M2V2 = M3V3

Where:

  • M1 = 0.2M

  • V1 = 1L

  • M2 = xM

  • V2 = 0.5L

  • M3 = 0.25M

  • V3 = 1.5L

Substituting the values:

(0.2M x 1L) + (xM x 0.5L) = (0.25M x 1.5L)

0.2 + 0.5x = 0.375

0.5x = 0.375 - 0.2

0.5x = 0.175

x = 0.35M

Answer

The value of x is 0.35M (Option b).
