During cellular respiration, electrons are transported through the electron transport chain (ETC) in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This process leads to the pumping of protons from the mitochondrial matrix into the intermembrane space. As a result, a proton gradient is established, with a higher concentration of protons in the intermembrane space compared to the mitochondrial matrix.

C*F1 Particle of ATP Synthase:
The ATP synthase complex consists of two main components: the F0 particle embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and the F1 particle located in the mitochondrial matrix. The C*F1 particle refers to the catalytic head of the F1 domain.

Conformational Change:
The proton gradient generated by the ETC drives the movement of protons back into the mitochondrial matrix through the F0 particle of ATP synthase. This flow of protons causes a rotation of the C ring within the F0 particle, which is coupled to the C*F1 particle.

This rotation induces a conformational change in the C*F1 particle, altering its shape and configuration. This conformational change exposes binding sites for adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate (Pi), which are the precursors for ATP synthesis.

ATP Synthesis:
Once the binding sites for ADP and Pi are exposed, these molecules can bind to the C*F1 particle. The conformational change also aligns the ADP and Pi molecules in a way that facilitates their chemical reaction, resulting in the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Several such ATP molecules can be synthesized by the C*F1 particle in a cyclic process as long as the proton gradient is maintained. The ATP molecules produced are energy-packed and can be utilized by the cell for various energy-requiring processes.
