When copper sulphate (CuSO4) is dissolved in excess potassium cyanide (KCN), a complex ion is formed in a stepwise manner.

Step 1:

The first reaction occurs between copper sulphate and potassium cyanide to form copper cyanide (CuCN) and potassium sulphate (K2SO4).

CuSO4 + 2KCN → CuCN + K2SO4

Step 2:

In the presence of excess KCN, the CuCN reacts with it to form a complex ion, [Cu(CN)2]-.

CuCN + KCN → [Cu(CN)2]-

Step 3:

Further addition of KCN to the reaction mixture leads to the formation of a tetra-cyanocuprate(II) complex ion, [Cu(CN)4]2-.

[Cu(CN)2]- + 2KCN → [Cu(CN)4]2- + 2K+

Step 4:

If more KCN is added, the tetra-cyanocuprate(II) complex ion reacts with it to form the tricyanocuprate(III) complex ion, [Cu(CN)4]3-.

[Cu(CN)4]2- + KCN → [Cu(CN)4]3- + K+
