Assertion: Rudolf Virchow modified the hypothesis of cell theory given...
Assertion and Reason Overview
The assertion states that Rudolf Virchow modified the cell theory originally proposed by Schleiden and Schwann. The reason given is that cell theory posits that all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
Understanding the Assertion
- Rudolf Virchow is known for his significant contribution to the cell theory, specifically the idea encapsulated in the phrase "Omnis cellula e cellula," meaning "every cell originates from another cell."
- This assertion highlights Virchow's role in modifying the original concept of cell theory, which was formulated by Schleiden and Schwann, who primarily focused on the idea that cells are the fundamental unit of life.
Understanding the Reason
- The reason provided states a fundamental principle of cell theory: that all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
- This principle contrasts with earlier beliefs about spontaneous generation, emphasizing that new cells are produced only through division of existing cells.
Analysis of the Relationship
- While both the assertion and reason are true, the reason does not directly explain the assertion.
- Virchow’s contribution is an addition to the existing theory, reinforcing its validity rather than simply explaining the modifications he made.
Conclusion
- Therefore, the correct option is b): Both the assertion and reason are true, but the reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion.
- This highlights the evolution of scientific understanding in biology, where each new finding builds upon previous knowledge.

Assertion: Rudolf Virchow modified the hypothesis of cell theory given...
Schleiden and Schwann together formulated the cell theory. The theory however, did not explain as to how new cells were formed. Rudolf Virchow (1855) first explained that cells divided and new cells are formed from pre-existing cells (Omins cellua e cellua). He modified the hypothesis of Schleiden and Schwann to give the cell theory a final shape. The present cell theory states that: (i) all living organism are composed of cells and products of cells. (ii) all cells arise from preexisting cells.
