Pentane is a straight-chain alkane with five carbon atoms and 12 hydrogen atoms. To make monovalent radicals, one hydrogen atom needs to be removed from the pentane molecule.


1. Pentyl Radical

By removing a hydrogen atom from the end carbon of pentane, we can produce a monovalent radical called pentyl radical. The structure of pentyl radical is as follows:

By removing a hydrogen atom from the second carbon atom of pentane, we can produce a monovalent radical called 2-methylbutyl radical. The structure of 2-methylbutyl radical is as follows:
