? Why did Gandhiji decided to withdraw cooperation movement?
Reasons for Gandhiji's Decision to Withdraw Cooperation Movement:
1. Chauri Chaura Incident:
The main reason for Gandhiji's decision to withdraw the cooperation movement was the violent incident that took place in Chauri Chaura, Uttar Pradesh in 1922. A group of protesters clashed with the police, leading to the death of 22 policemen. This incident deeply troubled Gandhiji as he believed in non-violent means of protest.
2. Non-Cooperation Movement Losing Focus:
Gandhiji felt that the non-cooperation movement was losing its focus and turning violent in certain places. He was concerned that the movement was getting out of control and becoming a threat to public peace and order.
3. Reassessment of Strategy:
Gandhiji believed in the power of non-violence and civil disobedience as means of protest. After the Chauri Chaura incident, he reassessed the strategy of the movement and decided that it was best to withdraw cooperation rather than allow it to descend into violence.
4. Commitment to Non-Violence:
Gandhiji was committed to the principle of non-violence and believed that any movement that resorted to violence was ultimately doomed to fail. He wanted to maintain the moral high ground and continue the struggle for independence through peaceful means.
5. Concern for Public Safety:
Gandhiji was also concerned about the safety of the protesters and the general public. He did not want the movement to escalate into widespread violence that could harm innocent people. Therefore, he decided to withdraw the cooperation movement to prevent further bloodshed.
In conclusion, Gandhiji's decision to withdraw the cooperation movement was a result of his commitment to non-violence, concern for public safety, and the need to maintain the moral integrity of the independence struggle.
