Solution:
Let the hire charges paid by A, B and C be a, b and c respectively.
According to the given conditions,
a + b + c = 520 ...(1) (Total hire charges)
Time for which the car was used by A, B and C are 7, 8 and 11 hours respectively
Hence, we can say that the charges paid by A, B and C are directly proportional to the time for which they used the car.
i.e., a/7 = b/8 = c/11
Let us assume that the constant of proportionality is k.
So, a/7 = k, b/8 = k and c/11 = k
a = 7k, b = 8k and c = 11k
Substituting these values in equation (1), we get
7k + 8k + 11k = 520
26k = 520
k = 20
Therefore, a = 7k = 140
b = 8k = 160
c = 11k = 220
Hence, the hire charges paid by B is Rs. 160.
Therefore, option (b) is the correct answer.

i.e., a/7 = b/8 = c/11
