Verified Answer
Which one of the following statements is true regarding digestion and ...
Fructose and amino acids are absorbed through intestinal mucosa with the help of carrier ions like Na+.Carbohydrates are absorbed as monosaccharides (simple sugars such as glucose, fructose, and galactose that cannot be further broken down by hydrolysis) or as disaccharides carbohydrates (such as sucrose, lactose, maltose, and dextrin that can be hydrolyzed to two monosaccharides). These simpler molecules, however, must be obtained by the breaking down of polysaccharides, complex carbohydrates that contain many monosaccharides.
Chief among these is amylase, a starch that accounts for 20 percent of dietary carbohydrate.

Absorption of Food in Humans

Fructose and Amino Acids Absorption

Fructose and amino acids are absorbed through the intestinal mucosa with the help of carrier ions like Na+. The process is called active transport, and it requires energy. The carrier ion brings the fructose or amino acid molecule through the intestinal cell membrane into the blood capillary on the other side.

Chylomicrons Transport

Chylomicrons are large lipoprotein particles that are transported from the intestine into lacteals, which are part of the lymphatic system. Chylomicrons contain dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins. They are too large to enter blood capillaries, so they enter lacteals, which eventually drain into the bloodstream.

Salivary Amylase Hydrolysis

Salivary amylase is an enzyme that breaks down starch into maltose in the mouth. However, only about 5-10% of starch is hydrolyzed by salivary amylase in the mouth. The majority of starch is broken down by pancreatic amylase in the small intestine.

Pepsinogen Secretion

Oxyntic cells in the stomach secrete the proenzyme pepsinogen. Pepsinogen is converted into the active enzyme pepsin when it comes into contact with hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Pepsin breaks down proteins into smaller polypeptides.

Conclusion

In summary, fructose and amino acids are absorbed through the intestinal mucosa with the help of carrier ions like Na+. Chylomicrons are transported from the intestine into lacteals. Salivary amylase hydrolyzes only a small portion of starch in the mouth, and pepsinogen is secreted by oxyntic cells in the stomach.

Which one of the following statements is true regarding digestion and ...
After digestion, most of the monosaccharides are absorbed into the body via active transport using sodium ions. Fructose is absorbed via facilitated diffusion. Amino acids are absorbed via secondary active transport using sodium ions. Chylomicrons cannot enter blood capillaries and hence enter lacteals. Only 5% of starch is hydrolyzed in the mouth. Proenzyme pepsinogen is secreted by chief cells in the stomach

So, the correct answer is 'Fructose and amino acids are absorbed through intestinal mucosa with the help of carrier ions like Na+'.
