Reaction occuring is

When the vessel is closed, volume = constant i.e.,
ΔV = 0
Hence, W = -PΔV = 0
When vessel is open, initial volume,
V1 = 0 (as no gas is present)
Final volume, V2 = volume of 3 mole of CH4
PV2 = nRT
∴ 
∴  W = -P (V2 - V1)
= -PV2

i.e., work is done by the system.
