Superelevation Calculation for a Highway Curve

Superelevation (e) is the banking of the roadway on a curve to counteract the centrifugal force acting on the vehicle. The superelevation of a highway curve can be determined by the following formula:

e = v² / (127R + 3.5)

where e = superelevation in decimal form, v = design speed in km/h, and R = radius of the curve in meters.

Given:

Radius of the curve (R) = 500 m

Design speed (v) = 100 km/h

Mixed traffic condition

Calculation:

e = v² / (127R + 3.5)

e = (100)² / (127 × 500 + 3.5)

e = 0.07 or 7%

Therefore, the superelevation for a horizontal highway curve of radius 500 m and speed 100 km/h in mixed traffic condition is 7%.
