Solution:

Given that,

Focal length of glass convex lens in air, f = 40 cm

Refractive index of glass, ug = 1.5

Refractive index of water, uw = 1.33

To find: Focal length of the glass lens when placed in water.

Using the formula,

1/f = (ug - 1) * (1/R1 - 1/R2)

where R1 and R2 are the radii of curvature of the lens surfaces.

We know that, the lens is convex, so the radius of curvature of both the surfaces will be positive.

Also, when the lens is placed in air, R1 = R2 = R (say)

Substituting the given values in the above formula, we get,

1/40 = (1.5 - 1) * (1/R - 1/R)

=> R = 40 cm

Now, when the lens is placed in water, using the formula,

1/f' = (ug/uw) * (1/f - (ug - uw)/R)

Substituting the values, we get,

1/f' = (1.5/1.33) * (1/40 - (1.5 - 1.33)/(40))

=> f' = 32 cm

Therefore, the focal length of the glass lens when placed in water is 32 cm.
