In a thermodynamic process, the pressure of a fixed mass of a gas is changed in such a manner that the gas release 20 J of heat and 8J of work is done on the gas. If the initial internal energy of the gas was 30 J, then the final internal energy will be
  • a)
    2 J
  • b)
    42 J
  • c)
    18 J
  • d)
    58 J
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

As per second law of thermodynamics ∆u=q + w.d. means change in internal energy is equal to heat released plus work done.. so ∆u= 20 +8=28 as it is given initial internal energy is 30. so final is 30-28=18(because we know the change in energy) so answer is 18 J
