Suppose you are developing a new drug, and have found that when it is administered in humans there is a substantial increase in the volume of urine produced. When you administer antidiuretic hormone (ADH, or vasopressin) at the same time, the volume of urine returns to normal. Which hypothesis best fits these observations? The new drug:
  • a)
Blocks the receptors for ADH on the collecting ducts of the kidney.
  • b)
Blocks the release of ADH from the pituitary.
  • c)
    Mimics the action of ADH.
  • d)
    Decreases blood pressure.
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Suppose you are developing a new drug, and have found that when it is ...
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH). ADH is produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. It causes the kidneys to retain water, constricts arterioles in the peripheral circulation, and affects some social behaviors in mammals.

Suppose you are developing a new drug, and have found that when it is ...
As from the interpretation, it is cleared that the Drug is increasing the urine output, it means it is causing Diuresis , that's case when there is decreased level of ADH since ADH has the function of antidiuresis, or increasing the reabsorption of water, Hence it can be concluded that it blocks the release of ADH from pituitary.

Here someone can ask why option A is not correct, the answer is that this receptor will allow water to be excreted more readily.
But since the problem can be solved by administering ADH, option B is more correct.

B) option is correct as ADH is released from pituitary and not from kidneys.
other two options do not resemble any point of the question.
